Vasari Centre & BIMI Digital Animation Series: Andy Holden

Event Description: For this event, artist Andy Holden presented his short film Laws of Motion in a Cartoon Landscape (2016), in which he explores the rules behind the universe of Looney Tunes and Silly Symphonies. A cartoon avatar of Holden guides his audience through a compilation of clips, ranging from animation to news reels, where he reveals ten rules that govern the interactions and movements of cartoon characters, and encourages viewers to question the forces underpinning our own society.

The Bedfordshire-based multi-media artist and musician is driven by an interest in time, history, memory, and nostalgia. In this recording, he and Esther Leslie discuss how these themes recur in his work and in life, the parallels between the cartoon universe and the real world, and Holden’s influences, from Kafka to Kanye West.
